Bombing in Kampala

Please pray for the families and victims of the recent bombings in Kampala. This past Sunday, several locations in Kampala were bombed during the finale of the World Cup. More than 70 people were killed in the bombings. In the following days, an Islamic militant group from Somalia claimed responsibility for the bombings. The reason for the bombings was because of the Ugandan peacekeeping efforts in Somalia.

I’m sure this is hard to think about since it is so far away, but this is hitting home with me as I will be in Kampala in just more than a month. It makes me nervous, but I am still very excited to go! Hopefully, Christ’s name can be proclaimed in the midst of this tragedy and that His peace can comfort those affected by the bombings.

There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. And I commend joy, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun.

Questions, Questions, Questions ....

What is EMI?

Engineering Ministries International (EMI) is a non-profit Christian development organization made up of architects, engineers and design professionals who donate their skills to help children and families around the world step out of poverty and into a world of hope.

What does EMI do?

They design schools, hospitals, orphanages, churches, and water systems all over the world. They have worked on 800 projects in more than 85 different countries. I will be volunteering in their office in Kampala, Uganda from the middle of August to the middle of December. This office has worked on projects throughout the East Africa region including Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.

What will I be doing?

As an intern, I will be under the supervision of the full time staff of engineers and architects in the office. Each day begins with prayer, praying for personal needs, projects, and other offices. After prayer, each staff member and intern goes to their desk and begins the day with the engineering and architecture work that is set before them. The tasks of an intern vary from AutoCAD drafting to writing reports to helping around the office with things like binding reports.

There will be one project throughout the semester that will take up most of my time. We will take a trip to the project site to do some information gathering and initial design. The rest of the semester will be spent in the office finalizing all the design and giving them to the ministry we are serving. I will also have some opportunities to get involved in other local ministries such as volunteering at the local street kids ministry. Additionally, each intern will be a part of a Bible study within the office.

If you have any other questions, check out emiworld.org or emiea.org for more info. Also, please feel free to contact me (dan.untch@gmail.com). I would love to hear from you… especially once I am overseas.
